The Healthcare Disparity
Medical Applicants Race/Ethnicity
Apart from White applicants (46.8%), Asian applicants made up the largest subgroup of applicants (21.3%). Meanwhile Black or African American applicants constituted only 8.4% of the applicant pool, and Hispanic, Latino, or of Spanish Origin applicants were 6.2% of the pool.
Physician Workforce
Among active physicians, 56.2% identified as White, 17.1% identified as Asian. Comparatively, only 5.8% identified as Hispanic, and 5.0% identified as Black or African American.
The Problem
There remains a huge disparity between not only the number of black or African American applicants and Latino students who apply to medical school compared to White and Asian, but also an even larger gap between the number of minorities who make up the number of physicians in America.
